Default Secondary Profession

Is it possible to pick up a secondary profession any time in this game? I mean by doing a quest or something. I am aware that in Pre-searing there is a quest available for each secondary profession. But I cannot seem to makeup my mind for now. In post-searing will there be such quests available readily in any area I go?

Once you get to Post-Searing, you can change your secondary Proffession when you get to the Crystal Desert and ascend. Once you've ascended, you can do various quests (the Ranger's Path, the Monk's Path, etc.) to 'unlock' a secondary proffession. Once 'unlocked', you can freely choose which secondary you want by speaking to the class trainer ghosts at various towns in the desert.

Hope it helps.

But be warned, this opportunity comes over half way through the game, so choose carefully now. The nice thing is, when you change secondary professions, you can always change back without losing any of the skills you've picked up.

So does this mean you can do ascension and the subsequent quests to change the secondary professions at lvl 10?

Whoa... Half-way through game =/= half-way levelled up. You should EASILY hit the max level of 20 by the time you ascend.

And also, the 50,000 XP you get from ascending will probably (or WILL, not too sure...) take you past level 10.

AND on a totally unrelated note... FAER T3H MITE OF MI N00 M3ZMAR!!!!11!!one!

Most people get to level 18+ by the time they get to that point. I should have said "well over 1/2 way", as there are only 6-7 missions after that point.

would someone clarify something for me with the second profession. i have been heasitating to change to the second profession.
when you change your second profession do you have to rebuy all the skills for your second profession or do you gain the skills you finished with the quests you did during the whole run? i really don't want to spend all that gold to build up my character for just the second profession.

All skills that you have unlocked will remain on your account. If you aren´t happy with your new secondary and choose to go back to your original secondary, those skills you have unlocked will be there, so don´t worry..

Edit: Misread the question, NatalieD beneath me has the correct answer

When you change to a new secondary, you only get the pre-searing skills for it. You can go back and do all the skill quests in Ascalon and Yak's Bend for a few more skills, but for the rest you'll have to buy them from trainers. (Unless you had some skill quests sitting around unfinished before you changed, of course.)

If you change back to a secondary you've already had, you get back all the skills you had for it.

You could probably make a PvP character with that class and get like 4 or 5 skills unlocked.

Does this include capped elites?

I'd like to try a different prof combo, but I'm weary of losing my caps in case I don't like the new second prof.

Also, once you've done a particular "Path" quest, do you have to re-do it the next time you want to change to that profession?

Thank you in advance.

You don't lose any skills, elites, or pets by changing second profession.

You need to choose a second profession to get out of presearing and into postsearing in Tyria.

You can change the 2nd profession in Tyria with various quests in the desert. However, if you have Factions, you can do it quicker. You can wait til you get to Lions Arch or just get a run there. Then do the quest from the Skills trainer there to take the boat to Cantha. At Cantha you can get max armor and level up with quests that reward 3k experience each. You can just get a hench group and stay alive. Eventually work your way to Senji's Corner where you can have access to all the professions from one NPC character. It's a one time fee of 500 gold for each profession you want to access.
